Considering that metal detectors are becoming more and more sophisticated, the device itself consists of just a few components.
Basic components of a metal detector
Control Box – The control box of a metal detector houses the electronic components of the device. This includes the signal processing circuitry, audio circuitry, the display, batteries, as well as the various knobs and button controls. Some metal detectors are waterproof, meaning that the control box is fully submersible, where others are not. Please be sure to consult your owner’s manual prior to operating your metal detector in water.
Search Coil – A metal detector search coil is the part of a metal detector that detects metal objects that are located in the ground. Search coils come in different shapes and sizes and connect directly to the control box via a wire that is wound around the shaft. There are some exceptions to this, the XP Deus for example is completely wireless. Generally speaking, larger search coils offer greater depth and are best suited for metal detecting in large, open areas such as fields. Medium sized search coils are appropriate for general use, while small search coils are ideal for use in high trash areas as well as in tight spaces. Most modern search coils are waterproof, be sure to consult your owner’s manual prior to operating your metal detector in water.
Shaft – The shaft of a metal detector connects the search coil with the control box. The shaft is adjustable so that the metal detector can be operated comfortably by individuals of different heights.
Grip – The grip is the part of the metal detector where the operator places their hand in order to hold the device steady during use.
Arm Cuff – The arm cuff of a metal detector connects directly to the shaft and prevents the metal detector from becoming unwieldy as the search coil is swung back and forth over the ground.
